What does a board-certified periodontist do?

Periodontists are experts in the treatment of gum disease and are highly skilled in the use of surgical and non-surgical techniques in the treatment of a variety of periodontal issues. Like their Prosthodontist counterparts, Periodontists are required to take an additional three years of specialty training in Periodontology and Implant dentistry to supplement their degree in general dentistry.

Periodontists can choose to seek board certification through American Board of Periodontology (ABP). This requires an intensive examination process and requires continued education to retain their certification. Patients who seek treatment from a board-certified periodontist can have confidence in the quality of care they receive, as well as the expertise and skill of their provider.

Periodontists can provide a range of treatments to help manage gum disease, including scaling and root planing, jawbone restoration, periodontal surgery, and dental implant placement. They also work as a team with other specialties to provide more comprehensive care.
